Sean Scully

Sean Scully (b. 1945, Dublin) is a leading figure in contemporary abstraction whose work reintroduced emotion and spiritual depth to a field long shaped by Minimalism. Raised in London and educated at Croydon College of Art and Newcastle University, he later moved to New York in 1975, where he established an international career spanning more than five decades. Scully is best known for his monumental paintings composed of vertical and horizontal bands, stacked blocks, and shifting fields of color. Built through layered brushwork and tonal variation, his compositions balance structure and gesture, conveying both architectural strength and emotional resonance. Drawing on influences ranging from American abstraction to European modernism, his work bridges formal rigor and human experience. Scully became the first Western artist to receive a career-length retrospective in China in 2014. He is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and continues to live and work between New York and London.

Scully’s work is held in the permanent collections of leading international institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Tate Modern, and the Centre Pompidou, underscoring his global significance in contemporary painting.
