Hiroko Takeda
Hiroko Takeda (b. 1966) is a New York–based artist known for redefining contemporary weaving through works that move fluidly between painting and sculpture. Born in Japan to a fashion educator and an architect, she developed an early sensitivity to material, structure, and design. Her encounter with traditional looms led her to study the principles of Mingei, the Japanese arts and crafts movement, which values craftsmanship and the beauty of natural materials. She later earned a Master’s degree in Constructed Textiles from the Royal College of Art in London. Takeda approaches weaving with both openness and precision, carefully arranging her compositions while allowing the process to generate unexpected results. Her work often plays with light and shadow, weight and transparency, creating pieces that feel both structured and fluid. After eight years as senior designer at Jack Lenor Larsen Studio, she founded her own practice, collaborating with prominent architects and luxury brands.
Takeda’s work has been showcased in exhibitions across the United States, Europe, Australia, and Japan. Renowned publications such as Architectural Digest, Surface Magazine, and Ludion’s 2018 book “Weaving: Contemporary Makers on the Loom” have featured her creations.
