Joan Witek

Joan Witek (b. 1943) has devoted her career to exploring the depth and complexity of the color black. Working in abstraction, she explores the remarkable diversity and meaning that can be found in a single color that is often seen as the absence of color. For Witek, black is never static or uniform; it shifts between matte and gloss, density and light, restraint and intensity. Her paintings are carefully balanced and built on subtle shifts in tone, encouraging viewers to slow down and engage in close looking. By working with variations in surface and light, she shows how black can feel both controlled and expressive. Witek values refinement and balance above dramatic gesture, allowing the interaction of light and texture to energize each piece. Over decades, she has developed a clear and personal approach that reconsiders how we think about minimalism and color. In her work, black is not an absence but something active, complex, and quietly powerful. 

Recent solo exhibitions of Witek's work include Museum Wilhelm Morgner, Soest, Germany, Katonah Museum of Art, and Galerie Weinberger, Copenhagen, Denmark.Her works are included in numerous public collections, such as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in New York, Arkansas Arts Center, Carnegie Museum of Art in Pennsylvania, Fogg Art Museum at Harvard College, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art  San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Yale University Art Gallery, among others.
