Julie DeVries
Julie DeVries (b. 1980) is a Houston-based visual artist whose work examines the relationship between the mundane and the natural world. Working across painting, installation, digital drawing, and animation, she draws on memory and observation to portray nature in urban and suburban settings, reflecting on human impact and the emotional value within green spaces. Her work moves between direct depiction and personal interpretation, using layered surfaces and shifting perspectives to shape each scene. Through these images, DeVries encourages viewers to look more closely at familiar surroundings and their connection to the landscape. Born and raised in Houston, she earned her BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago, where she focused on painting and Latin American art history, and later received her MFA in painting and drawing from the University of Houston.
Her work has been exhibited and collected nationally, included in the Houston Endowment permanent collection, and was recently featured in a solo exhibition at Hunter Dunbar Projects reviewed by The Brooklyn Rail.
