Adrian Berg
Adrian Berg (1929–2011) was one of the foremost British landscape painters of the late twentieth century, celebrated for transforming familiar urban landscapes. Born in London, he studied at the Royal College of Art, where he formed a lasting friendship with David Hockney. At a time when abstraction and conceptual art dominated, Berg remained committed to representation, convinced that there was still uncharted territory in the genre of landscape painting to explore. For over twenty-five years he painted Regent’s Park from his window at Gloucester Gate, developing a visual language that combined multiple viewpoints, shifting light, and different temporalities within a single composition. His subjects later expanded to Kew Gardens, the Lake District, Syon Park, Stourhead, the Sussex coast, and the gardens of the Alhambra.
Though personally private, Berg received significant recognition during his lifetime. A major retrospective at the Serpentine Gallery in 1986 toured nationally. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1992 and named an Honorary Fellow of the RCA in 1994. Berg’s paintings are held in leading public collections in Britain, including the Tate, the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Royal Academy of Arts.
